There are three different methods to dye your dark brown hair with red highlights. Following are the three ways to dye dark brown hair.
Method 1: Jamaican Sorrel

- Gathering the Ingredients: Those people who live in tropical countries can easily find the fresh Jamaican Sorrel. Jamaican Sorrel is a red color flower that gives the hair a ruby hue that shines in the sun. If you are not able to find fresh Jamaican Sorrel, then buy a dried one. You will need two cups. Along with Jamaican Sorrel following ingredients are also required.
- 2 cups of water
- ¼ cup honey
- Making the Mixture of Sorrel: Put two cups of water in a saucepan over medium heat. Boil the water, then add sorrel, cover the pan, and turn off the heat. Leave the Sorrel to soak in water for several hours so that the sorrel dye steeps in water. After that strain the water into a bowl and mix honey.
- Getting your Hair Ready: Shampoo your hair without using conditioner. The conditioner should not be used because it stays in the hair and prevents the hair dye from setting. Dry your hair using a towel and use a wide-tooth comb to remove the tangles in your hair.
- Apply the Mixture: Wear latex or plastic gloves and use your fingers to spread the mixture through your hair from the roots to the tips. Make sure that you distribute the dye well so that no strands are left. To have red highlights separate your hair from the rest of the hair using an aluminum foil. For applying the treatment use a pastry brush or an old paintbrush.
- Drying the Dye by Covering Your Hair: Cover your hair using a plastic shower cap or plastic wrap so that the dye does not dry out while the dye is soaking in. The more time the color stays in the head, the redder, it will look.
- Rinse the Dye: Remove the plastic cap and wash/rinse your hair with warm water. Use shampoo and conditioner and dry your hair and then style it.

- Make a Juice of Two Beets: Beet juice will create a dark auburn hue when used on dark brown hair. You will only need the juice of beet, not the flesh. If you do not have a juicer, then run the beets through a blender and use the strainer to strain the juice from the pulp.
- Mix Beet Juice with Honey: Put the beet juice in a bowl and add ¼ cup of honey to it. Mix it well until the mixture is completely ready. This mixture is now ready to apply to your hair.
- Getting your Hair Ready: Wash your hair with shampoo but do not use conditioner because it prevents the dye from setting. Dry the hair using a towel and remove the tangles using a wide-tooth comb.
- Apply the Mixture: Wear latex or plastic gloves and use your fingers to apply them to your hair. Make sure that every strand is covered with the mix. For Auburn highlights use the mixture to individual strands separated from other hair by aluminum foil.
- Drying the Dye by Covering your Hair: Cover the hair with a plastic shower cap or plastic sheet and wait for the beet juice to turn your hair auburn. Leave the mixture in your hair for 4 hours or overnight
- Rinse the Dye: Rinse your hair with warm water to remove the juice and honey and also use shampoo and conditioner. Dry your hair, and you will see dark auburn tones.
